the venue,
dates and some links to other UK gardens shows
These
gardens are open all year round with exhibitions
and flower shows on all the time.
Kew
Gardens 2006 is a major international visitor
attraction and its 132 hectares of landscaped
gardens attract over one million visitors per
year.
Kew
Gardens was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site
in July 2003 and represents over 250 years of
historical landscape. RBG, Kew gardens 2006 is
a world famous scientific organisation, internationally
respected for its outstanding living collection
of plants and world-class herbarium as well as
its scientific expertise in plant diversity, conservation
and sustainable development in the UK and around
the world.
It's
thanks to the mother of King George III, back
in 1759, that the natural wonders of Kew Gardens
2006 are on show for the public to enjoy. A kind-hearted
soul, she laid out three and a half hectares of
her private estate for educational and scientific
purposes. Now this venerated botanic institution
is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Kew
Gardens 2006 are, without doubt, a botanist's
heaven. Its gardens, greenhouses and laboratories,
spread along the banks of the River Thames, offer
examples of 90 per cent of the world plant kingdom,
ten per cent of the world fauna (making that 40,000
taxa) as well as harbouring 80,000 artefacts of
plant origin. All this makes it a very pretty
place too.
There's
always something going on amongst the greenery
at Kew Gardens 2006. The "Wild Summer"
event this year (May to July) is an excellent
example of the lengths that those at Kew will
go to to bring colour and nature to the public
- a huge wheatfield by the Broadwalk has been
prepared for a burst of colour with an enormous
range of unusual wild flowers.
If
you get bored of London's concrete, a day at Kew
Gardens 2006 should restore your faith in humanity.
And if you ever have a niggling question about
a plant or flower, the clever people at the end
of the telephone line are always happy to help
you out.
